Coal mine turned solar project lauded as a green success story, but experts want more investment to boost jobs As dusk descends on South Africa's coal belt, a stretch of land scarred by decades of mining now flickers to life as dozens of solar street lamps light up Nomzamo. In sub-Saharan Africa, Solarcentury Africa is a market leader in the development of solar PV and storage projects using smart energy technology and controls. We have a total of 980 MW of renewable energy projects under active development with exclusive agreements, and an additional 4 GW of solar. The South African government initiated these programs to expand the concentrated solar power (CSP) and solar photovoltaic (PV) sectors and address the increasing electricity demand for the future. For the past year, Siphesihle Magagula has been going door-to-door selling solar power to his neighbourhood, Nomzamo, which never had electricity before despite being close to South Africa’s biggest coal mines and power stations.
