Wüsten-solarstromerzeugung und wasserelektrolyse

Wissenschaftler der König-Abdullah-Universität für Wissenschaft und Technologie (KAUST) haben nun ein System vorgestellt, das Wasser und Strom in der Wüste erzeugen kann. Laut ihrer Publikation im Fachmagazin Cell Reports Physical Science besteht das WEC2P genannte System aus zwei Komponenten, die ein Hydrogelmiteinander verbindet. Wie die Entwickler erklären, hilft das Hydrogel sowohl bei der Stromerzeugung als auch bei der Wassergewinnung. Ohne ihr System heizten sich die Photovoltaikmodule tagsüber auf bis zu 90 Grad Celsius auf. Das Konzept sah bei Gründung der Desertec Foundation vor, an geeigneten Standorten der Welt Ökostrom zu erzeugen und diesen mittels Hochspannungs-Gleichstrom-Übertragung (HGÜ) zu Verbrauchszentren zu leiten. Über die Jahre kamen Pläne zu Wasserstoff und anderen chemischen Energieträgern, insbesondere Eisenbrennstoff, hinzu.
